Prosthetics FAQ

Real answers to the questions patients ask most — from first steps after amputation to life with a prosthetic. Tech Ridge Prosthetics is fully mobile and serves Austin, TX and surrounding areas. Call us at (512) 297-2724.

Getting Started

  • Right after surgery, your care team will focus on healing your residual limb — but you can start the prosthetic process sooner than most people expect. Call Tech Ridge Prosthetics at (512) 297-2724 to schedule a free consultation, and founder Tony Fraello, CP, LP will walk you through exactly what comes next so you’re never guessing on your own.

  • Look for a Certified Prosthetist (CP) or Licensed Prosthetist Orthotist (CPO) — those credentials mean your provider has passed national board exams and meets state licensing standards. At Tech Ridge Prosthetics in Austin, TX, every patient works directly with credentialed clinicians, including Sydney, a Licensed CPO, so you always get clinical-level care.

  • If you are able, bring your surgical discharge paperwork, any imaging or physician notes related to your amputation, and your insurance card. It also helps to write down your daily goals — whether that’s transferring from a chair to your bed, returning to work, walking your dog, or getting back to a sport — so your care team can match you to the right device from day one.

  • Your first appointment is a conversation, not a procedure — your clinician will assess your residual limb, review your health history, and talk through your lifestyle and goals. At Tech Ridge Prosthetics, that visit happens wherever is easiest for you: your home, your rehab facility, or your workplace, because the entire practice is fully mobile.

  • Most patients become candidates for starting the process once the residual limb has healed and stabilized, which typically takes 4-8 weeks post-surgery depending on wound closure and swelling. Your surgeon will give you the clinical green light, and Tech Ridge Prosthetics can begin the fitting process shortly after — sometimes starting with a preparatory or test socket before moving to a definitive device.

  • Yes — at Tech Ridge Prosthetics, we specialize in designing and fabricating custom adjustable prosthetic sockets that adapt to your body throughout the day—because we know your limb can naturally change in size due to activity, temperature, and fluid fluctuations.

Our process starts with a detailed evaluation and measurement of your residual limb. We use a combination of hands-on assessment and precise fabrication techniques to create a socket that fits comfortably while allowing for built-in adjustability.

Unlike traditional rigid sockets, our adjustable sockets incorporate dynamic components such as adjustable panels, tensioning systems, or flexible materials. This allows you to fine-tune the fit easily—whether you’re at home, at work, or on the go.

We fabricate our prosthetics in-house at our Austin-area facility, which means faster turnaround times, better quality control, and the ability to make real-time adjustments during your fittings.

    Why does adjustability matter?

Your limb isn’t static—and your prosthetic shouldn’t be either. Adjustable sockets help:

    • Improve daily comfort

    • Reduce pressure points and skin irritation

    • Accommodate volume changes throughout the day

    • Extend the life and usability of your prosthesis

Who benefits from an adjustable socket?

Adjustable prosthetic sockets are especially helpful for:

    • New amputees experiencing limb volume changes

    • Active patients whose limb size fluctuates throughout the day

    • Patients who want more control over their fit and comfort

Do I still need follow-up appointments?

Yes—but fewer. While adjustable sockets reduce the need for frequent modifications, we still recommend periodic check-ins to ensure optimal fit, alignment, and long-term comfort.

  • No — we have an office location you can be seen at as well. The address is3503 Wild Cherry Dr unit 13, Austin, TX 78738

Mobile Service

  • Yes — from your initial evaluation to socket casting, fittings, adjustments, and follow-up care, every step can take place at your home, rehab facility, or workplace. Tech Ridge Prosthetics built its entire model around eliminating the need for patients to travel, which is especially important in the weeks right after surgery when mobility is limited.

  • Depending on where you are in the process, a visit might include casting, a residual limb assessment, a diagnostic socket fitting, gait training, or a routine adjustment — your clinician brings the right materials for each specific appointment. Nathan, our patient liaison and amputee himself, coordinates each visit so you know exactly what to expect before the clinician arrives.

  • No — Tech Ridge Prosthetics does not charge extra for mobile visits. The cost of your prosthetic care is billed the same way regardless of where the appointment takes place, and your insurance covers mobile visits just as it would cover a clinic appointment.

  • A Tech Ridge clinician comes to your door with everything needed — casting materials, diagnostic tools, and fitting components — so your appointment runs the same as it would in a clinic. You don’t need to arrange transportation, navigate stairs, or sit in a waiting room; the care comes to you at the time you schedule.
